Workshop Description

This is an intensive introductory/intermediate course on riparian and wetland plant identification and ecology. It is geared towards anyone who wants or needs to improve their knowledge and skills about riparian/wetland plants. Emphasis will be given to central California species and habitats; however, information learned in this class will be readily applicable throughout California and elsewhere. Common and rare species will be covered. The class will include classroom presentation and exercises, and field excursions, primarily into the upper Salinas River, a dynamic free-flowing central California river. We will spend about half the time in the field. Botanists that conduct wetland delineations, habitat assessments, and habitat planning and restoration must know how to identify riparian wetland plants in order to do their job. After completing this workshop, the participant will be able to identify the most common and characteristic riparian plants found in the upper Salinas River watershed, most of which can be found throughout California. The workshop will last for two full days with about half that time spent in the field looking at and becoming familiar with the riparian wetland plants. Riparian ecology and environmental regulations related to wetland habitats will be discussed; however, the primary emphasis of this workshop will be on how to identify the plants. Instructor: David Magney, Principal Biologist at Althouse and Meade, Inc. He is a Certified Consulting Botanist #0001, and a ISA Certified Arborist #WE-7674A. Mr. Magney has developed and implemented mitigation for over 35 years. He has taught versions of this workshop for over 10 years through the California Native Plant Society. This workshop qualifies for 4 Professional Development Credits for Certified Field and Consulting Botanists. It is also beneficial for botanists that wish to prepared for the Botanist Certification exams.
